Wk 13 — Art Activity — Portfolio Research
Long Beach Police Department- SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION
In this department they focus on Homicide Investigations. They are responsible for investigating kidnapping, homicides, shooting, dead body, and special accident cases. Homicide detectives also speak to suspects and victims in the crime in order to understand further about the case they are assigned to. They are also responsible for presenting review boards for shooting and in-custody deaths. Their jobs are very dangerous as they are at risk, when attempting different crime scenes and locations.
I would offer value to this department because I attend school in Long Beach. I received my education in the area and would be a member of the community. I also would have the expertise to be part of this division. I am young and have much knowledge to spread and have much to learn from others as well. Essentially, I would have a degree in Criminal Justice and meet the qualifications to work as a homicide detective. I am also a great communicator and possess critical thinking skills.
POLICE SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR- Los Angeles, CA
A Police Special Investigator reviews/participates in investigations that involve criminal violations by LAPD employees. They review/ conduct personnel-related investigations like, Use of Force investigations and In-Custody Death investigations. They review allegations of employee misconduct/complaints from civilians and employees. Their job maily is to plan strategies and analyze documentary materials.
I qualify for this position because of the education I have thus far received in Criminal Justice. I have had previous work experience researching and participating in investigations. I am a dedicated worker and will continue to further my learning in this career in order to be the best potential candidate for this position.
CENTER FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH & TRAINING- Internship
The mission of the Center for Criminal Justice Research and Training is to provide today’s law enforcement and Criminal Justice personnel with current, relevant and quality training as determined by research and training needs assessments and to establish ongoing working relationships with the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), law enforcement agencies, Standards and Training for Corrections (STC), and other law enforcement professional associations.
I am fit for this internship because I am currently studying in the field of Criminal Justice and hope to one day obtain a career in this field. I am a hardworking and dedicated student. I have set forth many goals for myself and being part of this program will help me better prepare. I will also be able to make contact with those working in this department, which will give me connections for the future.
Commander Donald Mauk
Commander Donald Mauk holds himself to be a super reliable man. Mauk has taken various steps and training to be in the position he is in today. He has been working with the Long Beach Police Department since 1994. He received his education at Cal State, Fullerton. He has had previous work experience in many fields of Criminal Justice. Without this expertise he would not have been given this opportunity as commander.

Christopher Barling works for the Los Angeles Police department. Although I did not find his resume this blog post gives us an insight about how his job routine happens. He seems to really enjoy his job and appreciate the opportunity given to him. He presents himself as a really knowledgeable man. He describes the details of being a homicide detective in one of the largest cities. He does mention that it takes a lot of courage being a detective because they witness some gruesome and very emotional events.
Lt. Commander Vernon Geberth

Lt. Commander Vernon Geberth has already retired, but worked for the New York City Police Department with over 40 years of experience. Gerberth comes off as a really knowledgeable man. He has written a book about homicide investigation tactics, procedures, etc. Due to the cases he has solved and witnessed he has earned the title of a legend. His books highlight not only his personal biography, but also gives tips and offers his expertise.
A website would help me build a portfolio because it allows me to add different aspects linking me to be a good candidate. A website allows me to show the viewers and my target audience(those I plan to work for) my skills and knowledge not only by telling, but having them see it themselves. This portfolio will also allow for multiple people to know me better as opposed through a single sheet of printed paper. This will help me eventually stand out for those I am competing with for a job/position. It is also more convenient nowadays because the internet and media is increasing. In all it would highlight me as a great candidate because of the effort placed on presenting myself in a professional and efficient manner.
